Boys Basketball

Handling his height
By Greg DeVillers, Grand Forks Herald
Grand Forks Herald

WALHALLA, N.D. - Michael Mathison has found that heightened expectations accompany great height.

At 6 feet, 10 inches in height, Mathison towers over his opponents. But he's a late bloomer. The senior, a solid 250-pounder, is in his first season as a starter for the North Border boys high school basketball team.

“At times, I've felt some pressure,” Mathison said. “Being tall, I felt like people thought I should
be just great. I didn't think that was fair. Just because you're tall doesn't mean you're automatically going to be an all-star.

“Sometimes, I was frustrated (by the expectations). But I never thought about quitting. I knew basketball would be my sport. I just wanted to keep working and trying my hardest.”
Mathison still may not be an all-star. But he's a solid contributor on a North Border team that is considered one of the top teams in North Dakota's Class B Region 2. He's averaging 10.5 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocks per game.

“He's playing with a lot of guys who are good ballplayers,” Eagles coach Cooter Symington said. “But Michael has had streaks where he can carry us.
“He's improved a lot. Michael didn't put the time into his game when he was younger. It didn't seem like basketball was his priority. Michael decided about halfway through his sophomore season that he really wanted to work to be a player. And he worked hard at it.”

Always the big man

Mathison always has had good height.

He was 6-2 as a freshman. In the summer between his freshman and sophomore years in school, he grew 4 inches. He hit another growth spurt prior to his junior year, when he shot up to 6-9.

But that same height that brought on the high expectations also may have hindered his development.

“It's taken me some time,” Mathison said. “I didn't know what part of my game to work on. And
I struggled through the coordination process through my growing spurts.

“At the beginning of last season, I thought maybe I could get on our A squad and get some playing time. But we had six good seniors on the team, so I wound up on the JV team. That helped me in the long run. I could get more playing time and improve.”

Fun-loving spirit

Mathison's height makes him stand out. But, Symington said, there's more to the senior than size. Mathison isn't self-conscious about his height. He's not driven by athletics. He wants to be a well-rounded person.

“Michael lightens up practices,” Symington said. “He's always got a smile on his face, and he's a bit of a prankster. He's just a good kid. He's involved in drama. He's always got one of the lead roles, the ones with the most comedy in them, in class plays.

“I wish I could get him a little madder on the court. He plays better when he's mad. But he's a very easygoing kid.”

Mathison understands that his height has gained him a notoriety that, as yet, his production wouldn't bring.

“I'll be walking around before games and hear people saying, ‘Holy smokes, there's that big guy,' and I see them looking up at me,” Mathison said. “It's sort of funny. I think they know me even though I haven't played a lot yet.

“I feel pressure sometimes, that I should be better because of my height. I try. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't.”

N.D. on path to nirvana

Will a 3 Class North Dakota High School Basketball system be fair and equal?
Mike McFeely of the Fargo Forum has his opinion

Mike McFeely, The Forum

It is March 23, 2032, and North Dakota has done it. The state has achieved fairness in high school basketball. It has been a long and sometimes painful process, but who said making sure every child has an equitable and obstacle-free path to a state championship was going to be easy?

Some highlights:

- 2007 – The state goes to a three-class system, lauding its fairness.

- 2008 – After being deluged with complaints that the new system is not fair, the state goes to a five-class system and lauds it fairness.

- 2009-2015 – Still stung by accusations of unfairness, high school basketball expands to eight, 14, 24, 48, 64 and, finally, 90 classes over this period. Every class has two teams with exactly the same enrollment. Fairness is lauded.
function photoFull }

- 2020 – It’s decided that one team having players taller than another team is not fair. After debating mandatory amputation for anybody taller than the shortest player in the state (the threat of lawsuits discourages that avenue), coaches instead decide on mandatory crouching.

- 2021 – The mandatory crouching rule spawns a spate of knockoffs. No player can be faster than the slowest player in the state, so fast players are handicapped with ballast. No player can shoot more accurately than the worst shooter, so good shooters are forced to wear Coke bottle glasses. These rules apply to every possible area in which one player might have an advantage over another, which would not be fair.

- 2022 – Good coaching is declared as an unfair edge, so good coaches are replaced by fence posts. Fence posts who still out-coach opponents are replaced by Brad Childress.

- 2025 – Parents complain that one team actually scoring baskets against another is not fair.
Baskets are eliminated. When one athlete asks, “Then what’s the point?” his team’s sportsmanship banner is taken away by the North Dakota High School Activities Association.

- 2026 – Having one team win and one team lose is banned, since both teams work hard and it would be unfair for one to be unsuccessful. “Games” instead consist of every player being introduced to cheering fans, a few routines from cheerleaders, a danceline halftime show and both teams being declared “equally successful and well-loved athletic teams.”

- 2027 – Games are eliminated because every athlete did not get an exactly equal amount of cheering during introductions. Practices are gone, too, because there is a chance one athlete might do something better than a teammate. Teams instead gather for a few minutes every day and their coaches read a prepared statement praising them for existing.

- 2032 – Nirvana has been achieved. Every student who declares his or her intention of going out for the high school basketball team is immediately given a state championship trophy and allowed to cut down a net off a basket in the gym. From there they are whisked to a banquet where they are named MVP, best defensive player, rookie of the year, all-conference and all-state. Their picture is snapped for the local newspaper, where it will be run exactly the same size in an equally prominent location as everybody else’s.
The playing field has been leveled, everybody is equal and there is no reward for being more talented, harder working, smarter, bigger, faster or stronger than anybody else.
That’s fair, isn’t it?

Area Notes

Michael Mathison - The University of North Dakota has shown interest in having the North Border player walk-on. A few members of the Sioux coaching staff were at the Eagles game in Thompson to take a look at him.

Events - Monthly breakfast for the Park Board/Pool is Sunday morning, Jan 14th, again from 8:30 to 1:00.

Teddy Roosevelt - "Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorius triumphs, even though checkered by failure... than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat. "

Q AND A: Luke Lorenz, May-Port-C-G
Greg DeVillers - Grand Forks Herald

Lorenz was asked about the five toughest players from the area he's had to defend in the past few seasons: His picks:
-- Ryan Opdahl, Larimore: “Ryan was hard to defend because he always worked so hard. He was always driving to the basket, and he was really good on the offensive boards.”
-- Matt Anderson, Cavalier: “Matt's so strong, he was tough to move. He's the best all-around athlete I've had to guard. He didn't wear you out with his movement away from the ball but was always hard to guard because of his strength.”
-- Zach Winkler, North Border: “He had the best vertical of anybody I've played against. You'd stick with him, but he could still pull up and get his shot off over you. And you had to box him out hard or he'd get over you on the offensive boards. He could sky, and he was a quick jumper.”
-- Ethan Evenson, Hillsboro: “Ethan was always moving, wearing you out. Hillsboro would work him off double and triple picks. Hillsboro did a lot of stuff to set him up. You were always working through bodies trying to defend him.”
-- Clayton Johnson, Clearbrook-Gonvick: “He was No. 1. He moved real well without the ball, coming off screens. And he could take it to the hole or pull up and hit from long range. That's what made him so hard to guard.”
